Back-to-Back | BRUSA Crowned NFPL Champions After Championship Thriller
BRUSA Futsal Club 6–5 New Mexico Flagship Futsal Academy
It had everything.
Intensity. Quality. Tension. And in the end, history.
In the most physical, emotional, and high-stakes match of the NFPL season, BRUSA Futsal Club found a way once again — edging New Mexico Flagship Futsal Academy 6–5 to become back-to-back NFPL Champions.
From the opening whistle, it was clear this would be different.
There was respect between the sides — but not much else. Challenges flew in early, words were exchanged, and every possession carried weight. This wasn’t just a final. It was a fight for everything.
And it was New Mexico Flagship who struck first.
Inside the opening minute, David Rondon slipped a pass into Jesus Guillen, who produced a moment of brilliance — nutmegging his defender before calmly feeding Axel Esparza for a simple finish. A perfect start, and a statement of intent.
Flagship controlled the early stages, dictating tempo and limiting BRUSA’s attacking rhythm. Their movement and combination play, led by Guillen, Pedro Montes, and Rondon, caused constant problems, while Jose Castro in goal remained largely untested.
At the other end, Jared Wilson kept BRUSA in it.
A massive double save midway through the half preserved the 1–0 deficit and proved to be a turning point. Gradually, BRUSA began to settle, their possession improving, their movement sharper, and their confidence growing.
Then came the response.
A flowing move through Eduardo Medina and Micah Vasey caught the Flagship defense just a step behind, and Yan Brandao punished it — driving a powerful finish into the roof of the net to level the match. A moment of quality from the league’s standout player.
BRUSA began to take control, but against the run of play, Flagship struck again.
With under two minutes remaining in the half, Guillen delivered a brilliant cross-court pass to find captain Johann Prado, whose composed finish restored the lead. For a moment, it looked like Flagship might take control into halftime.
But BRUSA answered immediately.
Another loose ball, another moment for Brandao — and another unstoppable strike into the top corner. 2–2.
Game on.
The second half opened the same way the first had ended — with Brandao at the center of everything. Picking up the ball wide, he drove forward and released Vasey, whose explosive movement created space for a clinical finish into the top corner.
For the first time all game, BRUSA had the lead.
And they didn’t let go.
Their control of possession became more pronounced, their movement sharper, and their depth began to show. With fresh legs available, the tempo tilted in their favor, and the pressure on Flagship began to build.
With just over 16 minutes to play, Medina produced a moment of composure to extend the lead — slipping past a challenge before delicately chipping over Castro into the far corner. A finish full of confidence, and one that felt significant.
Flagship needed a response, but time was working against them.
With under seven minutes remaining, they committed forward, flying the goalkeeper in search of a breakthrough. It created opportunities — but it also opened the door.
And BRUSA walked through it.
A long ball forward from Brandao was expertly controlled by Vasey, who followed it with a thunderous volley into the roof of the net to make it 5–2. Moments later, a turnover allowed Pedro Lopez to add another into an empty net.
6–2.
It felt over.
But it wasn’t.
Flagship refused to go quietly.
A free kick from Guillen slipped through Wilson’s legs to make it 6–3. Minutes later, Prado, still acting as the flying goalkeeper, poked home through traffic to cut it to 6–4.
Then came another.
A quick switch of play from Rondon found Guillen, who smashed a near-post finish past a screened Wilson.
6–5.
With just over a minute remaining, the game was on the edge.
One more chance came — Esparza at the back post with 22 seconds left — but Wilson came up with the save, and the rebound effort drifted wide.
And that was it.
The whistle blew, and BRUSA had done it again.
Back-to-back champions.
In a match that had everything, they found a way — managing the moments, surviving the pressure, and delivering when it mattered most.
For New Mexico Flagship, it’s heartbreak — but also confirmation. They pushed the defending champions to the limit and proved they belong at the very top of the league.
For BRUSA, it’s history.
