Matchweek 2 Review: New Mexico Flagship Spoils Santa Fe Gloom’s Home Opener
Matchweek 2 in the NFPL Southwest Division delivered a statement performance as New Mexico Flagship Futsal Academy traveled to Santa Fe and claimed an emphatic 11–7 road victory over Santa Fe Gloom, spoiling the home side’s season opener at Santa Fe High School.
Flagship wasted no time asserting control, opening the scoring inside the first minute through Luis González, who set the tone with an energetic and confident display. The early pressure continued, and just under six minutes into the first half, Christopher Santos added the first of what would become a four-goal night, marking a standout debut for the young attacker following his All-League Honorable Mention recognition last season.
Santa Fe briefly responded when Bryan Rivas finished a well-worked corner routine, assisted by Julian Bustamante, offering a momentary spark for the home side. However, Flagship quickly pulled away, stringing together goals with composure and efficiency to build a commanding advantage.
By halftime, Flagship led 6–1, with Luis Loera emerging as the central figure in midfield. Loera added two goals before the break and orchestrated play throughout, earning Man of the Match honors. The half closed in dramatic fashion as goalkeeper Juan Ruiz caught Santa Fe keeper Jorge Morales out of position and scored with under ten seconds remaining, a difficult moment that capped a challenging opening half for Gloom.
Santa Fe opened the second half with renewed energy as Peter Torres found the net, again assisted by Bustamante, who would finish the night with three assists. But each time the home side threatened to build momentum, Flagship responded decisively. Axel Esparza restored the five-goal cushion minutes later, keeping the visitors firmly in control.
Despite quality finishes from Yoni Ruiz and Santiago Duarte, Santa Fe was unable to close the gap further. Christopher Santos sealed the result with two late goals, both assisted by Loera, who finished the night with three goals and two assists. Flagship remained composed down the stretch to secure an 11–7 victory, an impressive road win to open the season against their in-state rivals.
