Matchweek 10 Review: Chaos in the Southwest and Drama in Detroit

Matchweek 10 delivered one of the wildest weekends of the NFPL season so far. The Southwest produced an offensive spectacle as BRUSA and Santa Fe Gloom combined for twenty goals in a dramatic rematch, while Inter Detroit claimed a controversial victory after MitWest forfeited midway through the second half. Elsewhere, New Mexico Flagship earned an impressive road win despite a short bench.

In California, the scheduled Bay Area Footy vs HBK Futsal matches were postponed due to facility issues and will now be played Sunday, March 8.

Los Yunaites 1–6 New Mexico Flagship FC

Despite arriving with just seven players, New Mexico Flagship delivered a disciplined and efficient performance to earn a convincing road victory over Los Yunaites.

NMFS opened the scoring midway through the first half through Jaime Roa, but Los Yunaites responded quickly when Moises Diaz equalized shortly after. From there, however, Flagship seized full control of the match.

Christopher Santos continued his excellent season, scoring twice late in the first half to give NMFS breathing room. Roa added his second of the night before captain Johann Prado extended the lead further just before halftime.

Holding a commanding advantage after the break, Flagship managed the game comfortably. The second half saw limited scoring opportunities until Sebastian Contreras added the final goal in the closing minute to seal a 6–1 victory.

Considering the limited rotation available, it was an impressive and resilient performance from NMFS.

Inter Detroit 5–0 MitWest Futsal Club

The final score suggests a dominant performance, but the story behind Inter Detroit’s 5–0 victory was far more dramatic.

The match began evenly, with both sides creating chances in the opening stages. Inter finally broke through when MitWest were caught in possession while playing with their goalkeeper advanced, allowing Andres Chavez to calmly pass the ball into an open net for a 1–0 lead.

Late in the first half, Inter doubled their advantage when Nikolai Zacharko’s inbounds pass found Liam Holloway, who fired a first-time strike into the corner for a well-taken goal.

At halftime, the match remained competitive with Inter leading just 2–0.

The second half, however, changed everything.

Just six seconds after kickoff, Nate Boos scored to extend the lead, finishing from a Gabe Baylon assist. Moments later Baylon found Boos again unmarked near the top of the penalty area, and the Inter attacker calmly slotted into the far corner.

Boos completed his hat trick shortly afterward with a quick give-and-go with Guillermo Garcia, finishing from close range to make it 5–0.

Shortly after the third goal of the half, MitWest chose to forfeit the match, ending the contest with 17 minutes still remaining. The teams shook hands and the referee signaled full time, officially recording the result as a 5–0 victory for Inter Detroit.

BRUSA Futsal Club 11–9 Santa Fe Gloom

If the previous meeting between these teams was intense, the rematch was pure chaos.

Santa Fe Gloom struck first when Leonardo David Parra Huice beat his defender down the line before finishing cleanly into the far corner. BRUSA responded quickly when goalkeeper Jared Wilson scored directly from a punt, catching the SFG goalkeeper off his line.

What followed was an astonishing flurry of goals.

Within minutes, Parra scored twice more — completing a rapid hat trick — to give Santa Fe a surprising 3–1 lead. Shortly afterward Andres Monge added a long-range strike, and Julian “Chile” Bustamante scored directly from a corner kick to push the advantage to 5–2.

But the defending champions responded in emphatic fashion.

BRUSA erupted with six straight goals before halftime to completely flip the match. New signing Breno Silva began the comeback before captain Kaue Martins and Yan Brandao took over.

Martins delivered one of the most remarkable halves of the season, finishing with four goals and an assist before halftime alone. Brandao also found the net, while Silva added another during a goal-line scramble.

By the time the whistle blew, BRUSA had stormed back to lead 9–5.

The momentum carried into the second half. Eduardo Medina found Brandao with a perfectly weighted ball over the defense, and the Brazilian controlled it beautifully before laying it off for Diego Vargas to score and extend the lead to 10–5.

Santa Fe refused to quit. Captain Pedro Torres scored twice in quick succession to cut the deficit to three goals, and Andres Monge later added another powerful strike down the line to keep the game alive.

But BRUSA’s attacking quality proved decisive. Vargas scored again from a Medina corner kick to maintain control, and although Santa Fe added a late free-kick goal from Bustamante, the defending champions ultimately held on for an extraordinary 11–9 victory.

Twenty goals, multiple lead changes, and a remarkable first-half comeback made this one of the most unforgettable matches of the NFPL season.

The Updated Table

Matchweek 10 reinforced several storylines across the league.

BRUSA remain one of the most dangerous attacking teams in the NFPL, capable of overturning even large deficits. Inter Detroit showed their firepower in Detroit, while New Mexico Flagship demonstrated impressive resilience with a short roster.

With postponed matches still to be played and the season continuing to build momentum, the playoff race across every division remains wide open.
